As of next year, hearing impaired pupils in the country will be able to choose sign language as their first language at school.
This comes after the Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, approved this new development earlier this month.
The department said that this programme will be introduced to schools for the deaf first.
The Pan South African Language Board welcomed this approval, saying this is an important and positive response to the hearing impaired community.
